Dance of Divine Love: The Rasa Mandala of Krishna and the Cowherd Maidens

Painting by Krishna Priya in Jaipur, State of Rajasthan, India (2001)

Image Size: 23 1/2 x 31 1/2 inches
Medium: Opaque watercolor, gold and silver on hand-made jute and cotton board.

Located in the private collection of Graham M. Schweig.

This painting is a reproduction of an original work depicting the commencement of the Rasa Mandala, or the formation of the wondrous circle dance, described in the first several verses of the final chapter or act of the dramatic poem. Specifically, the image illustrates the Bhagavata Purana, Book Ten, Chapter 33, Verses 2 and 3. (or Rasa Lila 5.2-3). The  painting was commissioned by Graham M. Schweig, the author of Dance of Divine: The Rasa Lila of Krishna from the Bhagavata Purana (Princeton, 2005), who also worked closely with the artist to determine the general composition of the painting and details. The painting was executed by Krishna Priya in the traditional Rajasthani art, using all hand-ground paints, including pure gold and silver. The artist utilized brushes made of small tail-hairs of squirrels to achieve the great detail of the painting.
